What is Universal Design?
Universal design refers to broad-spectrum ideas meant to produce buildings, products, and environments that are inherently accessible to all people including older people, people without disabilities, and people with disabilities and able-bodied people.
What does it mean to age-in-place?
Aging-in-place is a more focused form of universal design. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines aging in place as “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level”. Most people regardless of age or ability will find that thoughtful home modifications are easier to use than conventional methods of living and construction.
Advances in technology and medicine have allowed people who decide to thrive at home the ability to do so with greater ease than in the past. Careful planning and the use of certain technologies can allow a person to be safe and healthy in their homes reducing the need for lengthy stays in medical institutions. Partnering with a universal design pro can ensure a beautiful, functional result that will not feel like a hospital or rehabilitation facility.
